●Why did you want to study abroad in Japan? /

Going on exchange is a compulsory part of my course here in Dublin City University. The place that students in my course are sent depends on the languages that they study. I am studying Japanese, which is why I ended up going to Japan.

●Why did you choose Tokushima University for your studying abroad? /

Tokushima appeared to be the cheapest option available to me.

●What subject have you been studying in your home university? /

Translation Theory, Japanese Language, Specialised Japanese Translation

●How did you prepare for studying abroad in Japan? /

In the few weeks prior to moving to Japan, I doubled my Japanese language study hours, while at the same time arranging for all the necessary medical and legal processes to be carried out.

●How was your experience in Tokushima? For example, was there anything that surprised you?

I thought it was okay. The limited public transport was a bit of a shock as it means that it was hard to get around.

●Have you used the Culture Lounge while you are in Tokushima University? What are your impressions of the Culture Lounge? /

Yes. The Culture Lounge is a great place to meet new people and relax or even to just sit down and have your lunch. It did seem there were very few newcomers coming in on a regular basis.

●How was your experience of taking courses in Tokushima University? /

While taking native-Japanese level classes was a good experience in that it left me no other choice than to improve my Japanese language skills, the first few months were quite difficult and I often had trouble understanding what the teachers saying. The Japanese language classes were mixed with some very good classes and some not so good. I feel that more Japanese language classes would have been useful.

 Native Japanese

●Are there any big differences with student life in Tokushima and the country where your university is?

In Ireland, there is a greater emphasis on clubs and societies than Japan and most students will join several societies at the same time. In Tokushima, I felt that the clubs were not very well advertised and that there was not much variety.

●What did you get an impact out of the most in your life of Japan or Tokushima? /

While in Japan, I learned more about the subtle aspects of Japanese social behaviour which I felt was quite important. I also used my time there to travel as much as my limited funds would let me, visiting Shodoshima, Nara city, Takamatsu city among others.

●What is your goal in the future? /

I would like to do something somewhere in Kansai area.

●Could you leave advice to students who want to study abroad in the future? /

The advice I would give is this: Forget about how little money/time you have and just do it. A lot of people never seize the opportunity to go abroad when they have and they end up regretting it when they get older.
